The President - Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, Maryland

This bronze by Andrew O'Connor is one of the least known statues of Abraham Lincoln in the Washington, D.C. area.
The bronze image of Lincoln closely resembles the photographic portraits of the war weary Lincoln taken near the end of the Civil War.
O'Connor's large piece was originally designed to be placed in Providence, Rhode Island in 1931. The commission that ordered the statue did not pay the Gorham Foundry for the work and it sat in the scrap yard at Gorham during years of litigation while gathering dust and scratches. In 1947 the Fort Lincoln Cemetery purchased the piece and placed it in the cemetery grounds. This statue deserves to be more widely known.

O'Connor has a much better known work in front of the eastern entrance to the State Capital Building in Springfield, Illinois. This work is known as "The Candidate". and was dedicated in 1918.
